Elbow pain physio in Farnborough

Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and repetitive strain treated at Abbey House, Farnborough Road.

Shockwave therapy being applied to the forearm below the elbow

Elbow pain tends to arrive quietly and then refuse to leave. Gripping the steering wheel on the A331, lifting the kettle, typing, carrying the shopping: an irritated tendon on the outside or inside of the elbow makes all of it sore. Most of the elbows we see at Farnborough belong to people who work at a desk, lift at the gym or have simply done a lot of one thing recently.

Treatment is a combination of hands-on physiotherapy, a graded loading programme that teaches the tendon to cope again and Shockwave therapy for tendons that have been painful for months. Injections and surgery are rarely needed.

You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.

What is usually going on

Common causes of elbow pain we treat in Farnborough

Tennis elbow

Pain on the outside of the elbow that spreads into the forearm and is worst when gripping or lifting with the palm down. By far the most common elbow problem, and most people who have it have never held a racket.

Golfer's elbow

The inside-of-elbow equivalent, affecting the tendons that bend the wrist and fingers. Common in climbers, gym-goers and manual workers.

Desk and keyboard strain

Hours with the forearm held still over a mouse. Usually comes with a stiff neck and shoulder, which we treat together.

Training overload

A new gym programme, pull-ups, racket sports or climbing added faster than the tendon could adapt.

Nerve irritation

Tingling into the ring and little finger may come from the ulnar nerve at the elbow or from the neck. The assessment sorts out which.

Referred pain

Some elbow pain starts in the neck or shoulder. We check the whole arm rather than just the sore spot.

Your first appointment

What the assessment involves

Your first visit is 30 minutes of assessment and treatment. We look at how the pain started, what your arms do all day, and what the elbow is stopping you doing.

We test the tendons, your grip strength, the nerves, and the neck and shoulder, so the treatment is aimed at the cause.

Treatment begins the same day. You leave with a handful of exercises at the right load for your tendon, not a printout of twenty.

How we treat it

Treatments for elbow pain at our Farnborough clinic

How long it takes

What recovery looks like

Tendons improve on a timescale of weeks, not days. Most people notice the pain easing within a few weeks of the right loading, and we are honest at the first visit about how long a long-standing tendon will take.

The goal is a forearm strong enough for your work and sport, so the problem does not return the next time you have a busy fortnight.

When to be seen sooner

Most elbow pain is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:

  • A hot, red, swollen elbow with no injury
  • You cannot bend or straighten the elbow after a fall
  • Rapidly increasing weakness or numbness in the hand
  • Severe pain with fever or feeling generally unwell

Questions we get asked

Elbow pain in Farnborough: your questions

Is shockwave therapy for tennis elbow available in Farnborough?

Yes. Shockwave therapy is offered at our Farnborough clinic for tendon pain that has not settled after three months of exercise and advice. The package of three sessions is £175 and is combined with a loading programme.

Should I stop using my arm?

No. Complete rest weakens the tendon. We adjust what you do and add exercises that load the tendon at the right level so it recovers.

Will a tennis elbow strap fix it?

A strap can reduce pain while you work, but it is a short-term aid, not a treatment. We will show you how to use one if it helps.

What does it cost?

Initial assessment and treatment is £55 (30 minutes), follow-ups are £45, shockwave is £175 for three sessions. See the therapy costs page.

Can I book directly at the Farnborough clinic?

Yes. No GP referral is needed. If you are using private health insurance, contact us first with your policy details.
