Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers pulses of acoustic energy into injured tissue. For persistent tendon problems that haven't settled with rest or exercise alone, it can kick-start the body's natural healing response.
What shockwave therapy treats
It is most effective for long-standing tendon and soft-tissue conditions, including:
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis and golfer's elbow
- Patellar (knee) tendinopathy
- Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder
How the treatment works
A handheld device is pressed against the skin over the painful area and delivers rapid pulses. This increases blood flow, stimulates cell repair and helps break down areas of scarring or calcification. Most people describe it as a firm tapping sensation.
How many sessions will I need?
Most conditions respond to a short course of three sessions, spaced roughly a week apart. At PhysiPro we offer this as a fixed package, and we combine it with a rehabilitation plan so the improvement lasts.
Is it right for me?
Shockwave isn't suitable for everyone, which is why every course starts with an assessment. If it isn't the best option for you, we'll tell you and suggest an alternative.
