Hip pain physio and rehabilitation in Farnborough
Hip and groin pain, tendon problems and rehab after hip surgery at Abbey House, Farnborough Road.

Hip pain is easy to misread. Pain on the outside of the hip that wakes you when you roll over is usually a tendon problem, not the joint. A deep groin ache on walking or putting on shoes is more likely the joint itself. Weakness months after a hip replacement is a rehabilitation gap, not a bad result. Each needs a different plan.
At our Farnborough clinic we assess the hip, the lower back and the knee together, treat what we find, and build the strength the hip needs. For patients recovering from hip replacement surgery, or for whom travel is difficult, we also provide the same rehabilitation at home across Farnborough and the surrounding area.
You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.
What is usually going on
Common causes of hip pain and rehabilitation we treat in Farnborough
Gluteal tendinopathy and trochanteric bursitis
Outside-of-hip pain, worse lying on that side, on stairs and standing on one leg. A loading programme for the gluteal tendons is the treatment that works.
Hip osteoarthritis
Groin pain, stiffness and a shrinking walking distance. Strengthening and movement are first-line care, and a stronger hip recovers faster if surgery is eventually needed.
Rehabilitation after hip replacement
Walking, strength, balance and confidence rebuilt in stages following your surgeon's protocol, at the clinic or at home.
Hip impingement and labral tears
A sharp pinch in deep squats, sitting low or twisting, common in younger and sporting adults.
Groin and hip flexor strains
Football, running and racket-sport injuries that keep coming back when the strength work is skipped.
Pain referred from the back
The lower back and hip share nerves and muscles; we assess both so the right one is treated.
Your first appointment
What the assessment involves
Your first appointment is 30 minutes of assessment and treatment. We go through how the pain started, what it stops you doing, and any surgery, scans or injections you have had.
We examine the hip's movement, where it is tender, gluteal strength, how you walk and balance, and how the lower back behaves.
You leave with a clear explanation and a short plan. Post-operative patients get a programme that follows the surgeon's protocol and is progressed with them visit by visit.

How long it takes
What recovery looks like
Gluteal tendon pain improves over weeks, and the exercises matter more than anything done in the treatment room, so we keep them few and specific.
After a hip replacement most people walk well within weeks; the strength and balance work that gets you back to long walks, gardening and sport continues for several months.
When to be seen sooner
Most hip pain and rehabilitation is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:
- Sudden severe hip pain after a fall, or you cannot take weight on the leg
- A hot, swollen hip with fever or feeling generally unwell
- Numbness around the groin, or difficulty controlling bladder or bowel, with back and hip pain
- After surgery: a sudden change in leg length or position, or new inability to move the leg

Questions we get asked
Hip pain and rehabilitation in Farnborough: your questions
Do you provide hip replacement rehabilitation in Farnborough?
Yes, at the Farnborough clinic and as home visits across the area. We follow your surgeon's protocol and progress walking, strength and balance with you.
Why is the outside of my hip painful at night?
That pattern is typical of gluteal tendinopathy, a tendon problem rather than simple bursitis. It responds to a specific loading programme and advice on sleeping position.
What does hip treatment cost?
Initial assessment and treatment is £55 (30 minutes) and follow-ups are £45. Home visits are £80 for the first and £70 after. Prices are on the therapy costs page.
Can physiotherapy help hip arthritis or do I need surgery?
Strengthening, movement and advice are the recommended first treatment for hip osteoarthritis and reduce pain for most people. If surgery becomes the right choice, we prepare you for it and rehabilitate you after.
Do I need a referral?
No. Book directly with our Chartered Physiotherapists. For insured appointments, contact us first with your policy details.
