What is usually going on
Common causes of shoulder pain and rehabilitation we treat in Farnborough
Rotator cuff injuries
Strains and tendon irritation from lifting, pressing and pulling at the gym, from manual work, or from a fall onto an outstretched arm. Reaching up and lying on the shoulder become painful.
Frozen shoulder
Gradually increasing pain followed by marked stiffness, often with no clear cause. It moves through stages over months, and treatment is adjusted to each one.
Painful arc and impingement
Pain as the arm lifts through the middle of its range. Usually improves with strengthening and better shoulder blade control.
Long-standing tendinopathy
Shoulder tendon pain that has lasted months. Shockwave therapy and, where pain blocks progress, injection therapy are options alongside exercise.
Post-operative and post-dislocation rehab
Getting movement, strength and confidence back after shoulder surgery or a dislocation, at a pace that suits the shoulder.
Neck-related shoulder pain
Some shoulder pain starts in the neck. We check both so the treatment goes where the problem is.
Your first appointment
What the assessment involves
Your first appointment at Farnborough is 30 minutes of assessment and treatment. We go through how the pain started, what it stops you doing, and how it affects sleep and work.
We examine the shoulder's movement, the strength of each rotator cuff muscle, how the shoulder blade moves and the neck, so the diagnosis is based on what we find.
Treatment begins the same day, with a plan that tells you what to do at home and how long recovery is likely to take.

How long it takes
What recovery looks like

Frozen shoulder takes months to resolve. Our aim is to keep you comfortable and moving through each stage so it recovers fully.
When to be seen sooner
Most shoulder pain and rehabilitation is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:
- Shoulder pain with chest pain, breathlessness or sweating. Call 999
- You cannot lift the arm after a fall, or the shoulder looks deformed
- A hot, swollen shoulder with fever or feeling generally unwell
- Rapidly increasing weakness or numbness in the arm or hand
