Knee pain physio in Farnborough
Sore, swollen or unstable knees assessed and treated at Abbey House, Farnborough Road.

A painful knee changes how you do everything, from getting off the sofa to the Saturday parkrun. At our Farnborough clinic on Farnborough Road we see knees that have been twisted on the pitch, knees that ache after running or cycling, knees that swell for no obvious reason, and knees that have been stiff and sore for years.
A Chartered Physiotherapist assesses the knee on your first visit, explains clearly what is going on, and starts treatment the same day. Most knees do not need a scan or an operation. They need the right diagnosis, the right hands-on treatment and a short, specific strengthening plan.
You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.
What is usually going on
Common causes of knee pain we treat in Farnborough
Sports injuries
Ligament sprains and cartilage (meniscus) tears from football, rugby, netball and skiing. Swelling within hours, instability or locking are the usual signs.
Runner's knee and front-of-knee pain
Ache around or behind the kneecap on stairs, hills and after sitting. Nearly always about kneecap tracking and hip and thigh strength, which is good news because both can be trained.
Tendon pain
Patellar tendon pain below the kneecap in jumping and running sports. A graded loading programme is the treatment; shockwave therapy is added when it has lingered for months.
Osteoarthritis
Stiffness, ache after activity and a knee that feels older than you are. Strengthening and movement are the recommended first treatment and reduce pain for most people.
Knee pain after surgery
Rehabilitation after arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction or knee replacement, following your surgeon's protocol.
Iliotibial band and outside-of-knee pain
Common in runners and cyclists; usually a load and hip-control problem rather than something to stretch harder.
Your first appointment
What the assessment involves
Your first appointment at Farnborough is 30 minutes of assessment and treatment. We ask how the knee was injured or how the pain crept in, what makes it worse, and what you want to get back to.
We examine the joint's movement, swelling, ligament stability and the strength and control of the hip, thigh and calf, because the knee usually carries the cost of problems above or below it.
You leave with a clear explanation, treatment started, and three or four exercises that fit around your day. If we think you need a scan or a consultant, we refer you on and say why.

How long it takes
What recovery looks like
Front-of-knee pain and simple sprains usually feel noticeably better within two or three appointments. Cartilage, ligament and post-surgical knees take weeks to months, and we map that out with you at the first visit.
The plan moves in stages: settle the knee, strengthen it, then load it for your sport or your stairs. Skipping the middle stage is why knees come back.
When to be seen sooner
Most knee pain is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:
- The knee swelled within an hour of an injury, locked, or gave way
- You cannot take weight through the leg
- A hot, red, swollen knee with no injury, or with a fever
- Numbness or pins and needles in the lower leg or foot

Questions we get asked
Knee pain in Farnborough: your questions
