Back pain physio in Farnborough
Lower back pain, sciatica and stiffness treated at Abbey House, Farnborough Road.

Back pain is the most common problem we treat at Farnborough. A back that has locked up lifting a toddler, an ache after a week of commuting and desk work, pain shooting into the buttock or leg: all of it is unpleasant, almost none of it is dangerous, and nearly all of it responds to treatment and movement.
We assess which joints, muscles and nerves are involved, treat the pain with hands-on physiotherapy and acupuncture where it helps, and give you specific stretching and core stability exercises that make the back strong enough to stop the next episode. If getting to the clinic is too painful, we come to you.
You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.
What is usually going on
Common causes of back pain we treat in Farnborough
Mechanical lower back pain
Overloaded or under-used joints and muscles. The most common type and the quickest to improve with the right movement and treatment.
Sciatica and nerve pain
Pain, pins and needles or numbness down the leg from an irritated nerve, often from a disc. Most cases settle with treatment and time, without surgery.
Disc-related pain
Discs can bulge and irritate nearby nerves. Scans are rarely needed to start treatment.
Commuter and desk stiffness
Long drives and long days sitting stiffen the back and hips. The workstation and the car seat are part of the plan.
Lifting and sports strains
Gym, golf, running and DIY injuries. Strength is the way back and the way to prevent a repeat.
Age-related stiffness
Normal changes on a scan are not a diagnosis. Keeping the back moving and strong is what matters.
Your first appointment
What the assessment involves
Your first appointment is 30 minutes of assessment and treatment. We listen to how the pain started, what makes it worse, whether it travels into the leg, and what you need to get back to.
We examine how your back bends and twists, test the nerves in the legs if there is leg pain, and look at the hips and how you move.
Treatment starts the same day, and you leave with three or four exercises and a plain explanation of what is going on.

How long it takes
What recovery looks like
Most episodes of mechanical back pain improve markedly within two to three weeks of treatment and the right movement. Sciatica often takes longer, and we tell you honestly what to expect.
The exercises are the insurance policy. Few, specific and done regularly beats a long list done once.
When to be seen sooner
Most back pain is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:
- Numbness around the groin or inner thighs, or difficulty controlling bladder or bowel. Go to A&E the same day
- Weakness in both legs, or pain and pins and needles down both legs
- Back pain after a significant fall or road accident
- Severe night pain with fever, unexplained weight loss or feeling generally unwell

Questions we get asked
Back pain in Farnborough: your questions
Should I keep working with back pain?
Usually yes, with adjustments. Staying active and at work tends to speed recovery. We advise on what to change at your desk or in the car and build activity back up.
Do I need an MRI first?
Usually not. A physiotherapy assessment diagnoses most back pain, and scans often show age-normal changes that are not the cause. If a scan would change your treatment, we will say so.
Can physio in Farnborough help sciatica?
Yes. Most sciatica settles with treatment that reduces nerve irritation, restores movement and builds strength. Acupuncture is used alongside hands-on treatment where it helps.
How much does back pain treatment cost?
Initial assessment and treatment is £55 (30 minutes), follow-ups are £45. Home visits are £80 for the first visit and £70 after.
Can you see me at home if I cannot travel?
Yes. Home visits cover Farnborough and the surrounding area.
