Shoulder pain and rehabilitation at our Basingstoke clinic

Rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder and lifting injuries treated at our Basing View clinic.

Shoulder pain is often associated with conditions such as rotator cuff tendinitis due to injury from lifting weights in the gym or a frozen shoulder.

Treatment at our Basingstoke clinic is usually a combination of hands-on physiotherapy, acupuncture, an exercise programme that teaches the tendon to cope again and Shockwave therapy for chronic tendinopathy. We also provide injections for shoulder pain that has lasted for months. Surgery is rarely needed.

You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.

What is usually going on

Common causes of shoulder pain and rehabilitation we treat in Basingstoke

Rotator cuff tendinitis and tendinopathy

Pain on the outside of the upper arm when lifting, reaching overhead or lying on that side. The tendons of the rotator cuff have been overloaded, often by gym work, decorating or a sudden jump in activity.

Frozen shoulder

A shoulder that becomes steadily more painful and then stiff, especially turning the arm outwards. It runs in stages over months, and physiotherapy and, where needed, injections help at each stage.

Subacromial pain (impingement)

A catching pain as the arm passes shoulder height. Usually a strength and control problem around the shoulder blade that responds well to the right exercise.

Weight-lifting and sports injuries

Strains from bench press, overhead lifting, swimming, tennis and throwing sports. Technique and loading are reviewed as part of the plan.

Calcific tendinitis

Calcium deposits in a rotator cuff tendon that can cause intense pain. Shockwave therapy is one of the treatments offered for it.

Rehabilitation after shoulder surgery or dislocation

Restoring movement, strength and confidence in stages, following the surgeon's protocol where there has been an operation.

Your first appointment

What the assessment involves

Your first appointment is a 30-minute assessment and treatment. We ask how the pain started, which movements hurt, how it affects sleep, and what you need to get back to, whether that is the gym, sport or reaching the top shelf.

We test how far the shoulder moves on its own and with help, the strength of each rotator cuff muscle, how the shoulder blade moves, and the neck, because neck problems often refer pain into the shoulder.

Treatment starts the same day. You leave with a clear explanation and a short set of exercises, and if we think you need a scan or a consultant opinion we will say so.

How we treat it

Treatments for shoulder pain and rehabilitation at our Basingstoke clinic

How long it takes

What recovery looks like

Most rotator cuff problems improve noticeably within a few weeks of the right exercise programme, though tendons take longer to fully recover and we will be honest about the timescale at the first visit.

Frozen shoulder runs over months. Treatment eases the pain and keeps movement going through each stage, and we set out what to expect from the start.

When to be seen sooner

Most shoulder pain and rehabilitation is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:

  • Shoulder pain together with chest pain, breathlessness or sweating. Call 999
  • You cannot lift the arm at all after a fall or injury, or the shoulder looks out of place
  • A hot, red, swollen shoulder, or shoulder pain with fever or feeling generally unwell
  • New weakness, numbness or pins and needles spreading down the arm

Questions we get asked

Shoulder pain and rehabilitation in Basingstoke: your questions

Can physiotherapy fix rotator cuff tendinitis?

For most people, yes. A progressive strengthening programme is the main treatment, supported by hands-on treatment and acupuncture, with shockwave therapy for tendons that have been painful for months.

Do you treat frozen shoulder in Basingstoke?

Yes. We treat frozen shoulder with physiotherapy at every stage, and offer cortisone injections where pain is stopping progress.

Do you offer shoulder injections?

Yes. Cortisone injections are available for shoulder pain that has lasted for months, combined with a rehabilitation plan. A cortisone injection, including the initial assessment, is £250.

How much does shoulder treatment cost?

Initial assessment and treatment is £55 (30 minutes) and follow-ups are £45. Shockwave therapy is £175 for three sessions. The full list is on the therapy costs page.

Should I keep going to the gym with shoulder pain?

Usually yes, with changes to the exercises and loads that aggravate it. Your physiotherapist will tell you what to keep, what to change and how to build back up.
