Elbow pain physio in Basingstoke

Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and repetitive-strain pain treated at Basing View.

Shockwave therapy being applied to the forearm below the elbow

Elbow pain rarely comes from anything dramatic. It is usually a tendon that has been asked to do too much: hours at a keyboard, a new gym programme, a season of racket sport, or a weekend of DIY. The pain sits on the outside (tennis elbow) or inside (golfer's elbow) of the joint and makes gripping, lifting a kettle or shaking hands surprisingly sore.

At our Basingstoke clinic we treat elbow pain with a combination of hands-on physiotherapy and a graded loading programme for the tendon, and we use Shockwave therapy where a tendon has been painful for months. Most elbows improve well without injections or surgery.

You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.

What is usually going on

Common causes of elbow pain we treat in Basingstoke

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylalgia)

Pain on the outside of the elbow that spreads into the forearm, worse when gripping, lifting or typing. The most common elbow problem we see, and most people who have it do not play tennis.

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylalgia)

The same problem on the inside of the elbow, affecting the tendons that bend the wrist and fingers.

Repetitive strain from desk work

Long hours of mouse and keyboard use with the forearm held still. Often paired with neck and shoulder tension, which we look at together.

Sports and lifting overload

A sudden increase in training, racket sports, climbing or heavy gym work.

Nerve irritation

Pins and needles into the ring and little finger can come from the ulnar nerve at the elbow or from the neck. Part of the assessment is working out which.

Referred pain from the neck or shoulder

Not every elbow pain starts at the elbow. We check the whole arm.

Your first appointment

What the assessment involves

Your first visit is a 30-minute assessment and treatment. We look at how the pain started, what you do with your arms all day, and what it is stopping you doing.

We test the tendons, the grip, the nerves and the neck and shoulder, so that the treatment targets the real cause rather than just the sore spot.

Treatment starts the same day, and you leave with a small number of specific exercises rather than a long printout.

How we treat it

Treatments for elbow pain at our Basingstoke clinic

How long it takes

What recovery looks like

Tendons are slow. Most people feel the pain ease within a few weeks of starting the right loading programme, but a tendon that has been painful for six months will not be fixed in two sessions, and we will say so.

The aim is a strong, pain-free arm that copes with your work and sport, not just a quieter elbow for a fortnight.

When to be seen sooner

Most elbow pain is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:

  • The elbow is hot, red and swollen with no injury
  • You cannot straighten or bend the elbow after a fall
  • Rapidly increasing weakness in the hand
  • Severe pain with fever or feeling generally unwell

Questions we get asked

Elbow pain in Basingstoke: your questions

Does shockwave therapy work for tennis elbow?

For tennis elbow that has not settled after three months of exercise and advice, shockwave therapy is one of the better-supported options. We combine it with a loading programme so the improvement lasts. The package of three sessions is £175.

Should I rest my elbow completely?

Usually not. Complete rest tends to make tendons weaker. We adjust what you do and add specific exercises that load the tendon at the right level.

Do I need a brace or strap?

A tennis-elbow strap can take the edge off while you work. It is a short-term aid, not a treatment, and we will show you how to use one if it helps.

How much does elbow treatment cost?

Initial assessment and treatment is £55 (30 minutes), follow-ups are £45. Shockwave therapy is £175 for three sessions. See the therapy costs page for the full list.

Can I book without seeing my GP first?

Yes. You can book directly with our Chartered Physiotherapists. Some insurers ask for a GP referral to authorise a claim, so check your policy if you are claiming.
