Knee pain physio in Basingstoke
Assessment and treatment for sore, swollen or unstable knees at our Basing View clinic.

Knee pain is one of the most common reasons people come to our Basingstoke clinic. It might be a twist on the football pitch, an ache that has crept in on the stairs, a knee that swells after a run, or stiffness that has been there for months and is now stopping you doing the things you enjoy.
Our Chartered Physiotherapists assess the knee properly, clearly explain what is going on, and put together a plan that gets it moving and strong again. Most knee problems we see do not need a scan or surgery; they need the right treatment and the right exercises, done consistently.
You do not need a GP referral. Book online, or call or text 07818 099994, and we will see you at the clinic or, if travel is hard, at home.
What is usually going on
Common causes of knee pain we treat in Basingstoke
Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain)
Pain at the front of the knee, worse on stairs, squatting or sitting for long periods. Usually linked to how the kneecap tracks and the strength of the muscles around the hip and thigh.
Ligament sprains
A twist or a tackle can strain the medial, lateral or cruciate ligaments. The knee may feel unstable or give way.
Meniscus (cartilage) injuries
Twisting on a bent knee can tear the cartilage pads inside the joint. Clicking, locking and swelling are common.
Patellar and quadriceps tendinopathy
Overload of the tendons above or below the kneecap, common in jumping and running sports. Often responds well to a loading programme and, for stubborn cases, shockwave therapy.
Osteoarthritis
Wear in the joint surfaces that stiffens the knee and makes it ache after activity. Strengthening and movement are the first-line treatment and make a real difference.
Iliotibial band pain
Pain on the outside of the knee in runners and cyclists, usually from load and hip control rather than tightness alone.
Your first appointment
What the assessment involves
Your first appointment is a 30-minute assessment and treatment. We ask how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and what you need to get back to, whether that is a parkrun, a dog walk or simply the stairs without thinking about it.
We then examine the knee: how it bends and straightens, where it is tender, how stable the ligaments are, and how the hip, ankle and foot are working, because the knee usually pays for problems above or below it.
You leave with a clear explanation, treatment started on the day, and a short exercise plan. If we think you need a scan or a consultant opinion, we will say so and refer you on.

Treatments for knee pain at our Basingstoke clinic

Advanced Physiotherapy
Hands-on treatment to settle pain and restore movement, with a progressive strengthening plan for the thigh, hip and calf.

Manual Therapy
Joint mobilisation and soft-tissue work for a stiff or guarded knee.

Sports Injury Rehabilitation & Prevention
Structured return to running, football and the gym after ligament, meniscus or tendon injuries.

Shockwave Therapy
For patellar tendinopathy that has not settled with exercise alone. Package of three sessions.

Injection Therapy
Cortisone or Ostenil injections for osteoarthritic knees where pain is blocking rehabilitation, always combined with a plan.

Kinesiology Taping
Support for the kneecap or ligaments while you rebuild strength.

Acupuncture
Useful alongside hands-on treatment when muscle tension around the knee is part of the picture.
How long it takes
What recovery looks like
Most people with everyday knee pain feel a real difference within the first two or three appointments, and we will be straight with you early on about what recovery looks like for your knee.
Ligament and meniscus injuries take longer, usually a number of weeks, and the plan changes as the knee improves: first settling it, then strengthening, then sport-specific work.
When to be seen sooner
Most knee pain is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:
- The knee gave way, locked, or swelled up within an hour of an injury
- You cannot put weight through the leg
- The knee is hot, red and swollen with no clear injury, or you feel generally unwell
- Numbness or pins and needles below the knee

Questions we get asked
Knee pain in Basingstoke: your questions
Do I need a scan before I see a physio for knee pain?
No. A physiotherapy assessment comes first. Most knee problems can be diagnosed in the clinic, and if we think an X-ray or MRI would change your treatment we will say so and help arrange it.
How much does knee pain treatment cost in Basingstoke?
An initial assessment and treatment is £55 for 30 minutes and follow-up sessions are £45. Shockwave therapy is a package of three sessions for £175. Prices are on our therapy costs page.
Can I still run with knee pain?
Often yes, with adjusted distance and intensity, but it depends on the cause. Your physiotherapist will tell you what is safe and build running back into your plan.
Is my knee pain arthritis?
Not every stiff knee is arthritis, and even when it is, strengthening and movement are the recommended first treatment and can reduce pain substantially. We will assess the joint and explain what we find.
Do you treat knee pain under private health insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Healix and Nuffield Health. Contact us with your policy details before booking an insured appointment.
