Neck pain that won't shift? Here's what's usually going on

Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see us, at our Basingstoke clinic. You wake up and can't turn your head to check your blind spot on the drive to work. Or there's a dull ache that spreads across to your shoulder blade by mid-afternoon, worse on the days you've spent stuck on video calls.

Our team in Basingstoke pinpoints the root cause of your discomfort as to whether it's muscular, spinal, nerve, or disc related and treats it with expert hands-on therapy and acupuncture. We'll equip you with a short, effective routine of posture correction and exercises to keep pain away for good.

No GP referral is necessary, and we provide both clinic and home visits if you are unable to get to us.

What is usually going on

Common causes of neck pain and posture correction we treat in Basingstoke

Desk and screen posture

Hours at a laptop or on video calls with the head pushed forward load the muscles and joints at the base of the neck. The ache builds through the day and spreads across the shoulder blades.

Stiff or locked joints

One or two joints in the neck stop moving freely and the muscles around them tighten to protect them. That is the sudden 'I can't turn my head' morning.

Muscle tension and tension headaches

Stress, long drives and poor sleep keep the muscles at the base of the skull and across the shoulders gripping, which often drives headaches.

Disc-related pain

A disc can irritate nearby structures and cause neck pain that sometimes spreads into the shoulder or arm. Most settles without surgery.

Trapped nerve (cervical radiculopathy)

Pain, pins and needles or numbness travelling down one arm from an irritated nerve in the neck.

Whiplash and old injuries

A car accident or fall, recent or years ago, that never fully settled and flares up under stress or strain.

Your first appointment

What the assessment involves

Your first appointment is a 30-minute assessment and treatment. We ask how the pain started, what your day looks like at work and behind the wheel, and whether it spreads into the head, shoulder or arm.

We check how the neck moves, which joints and muscles are involved, the nerves in the arms if there is any arm pain, and how you sit and stand, so we can tell whether the cause is muscular, spinal, nerve or disc related.

Treatment starts the same day, and you leave with a short posture and exercise routine that fits around your work.

How we treat it

Treatments for neck pain and posture correction at our Basingstoke clinic

How long it takes

What recovery looks like

Most everyday neck pain improves noticeably within the first two or three appointments. Nerve-related neck and arm pain usually takes longer, and we will be straight with you about what to expect.

The posture routine and exercises are what stop it coming back, so we keep them short enough to fit into a working day.

When to be seen sooner

Most neck pain and posture correction is a nuisance rather than an emergency. Get seen the same day, by us or your GP, if you have:

  • Neck pain after a significant fall, car accident or blow to the head
  • Dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, or unsteadiness with neck pain. Call 999
  • Weakness, numbness or pins and needles in both arms or both legs
  • Neck stiffness with a severe headache, fever or a rash, or feeling generally unwell. Seek urgent medical help

Questions we get asked

Neck pain and posture correction in Basingstoke: your questions

Can a physio help a stiff neck I woke up with?

Yes. A neck that locks overnight usually comes from a stiff joint and protective muscle spasm, and responds well to hands-on treatment and gentle movement. Most people feel a clear difference within a few sessions.

Is my desk causing my neck pain?

It is often a big part of it. We look at your screen height, chair, laptop use and how long you sit, and give you practical changes and a short posture correction routine.

Can neck problems cause headaches?

Yes. Tension in the neck and the base of the skull commonly drives headaches. Treating the neck, often with acupuncture and hands-on therapy, can reduce them.

How much does neck pain treatment cost in Basingstoke?

Initial assessment and treatment is £55 (30 minutes), follow-ups are £45. Home visits are £80 for the first visit and £70 after.

Do I need a scan for neck pain?

Usually not. Most neck pain can be diagnosed and treated without a scan. If we think one would change your treatment, we will tell you and help arrange it.
